Equipments are important in this game, and there are two types: Single (S) and All (A).

Single equipments can change your stats like HP, Spd, and Def, but it also changes the behavior of the particular ability the equipment is assigned to. If an equipment says:

(S) -10 HP, +5 Base Power.

and is equipped to the second slot, then the character equipped to it gets -10 HP, while only their second ability gets +5 Base Power.

All equipments modify all of the abilities - having an All equipment on the third slot, for example, will affect all of the abilities for the character who has it.
